About the Van Gogh Museum
The Van Gogh Museum is home to the world's most extensive collection of Vincent van Gogh's work β a legacy of the artist's brother Theo and his family, who preserved the collection with extraordinary dedication. The purpose-built museum opened in 1973 and has become one of the world's most important art institutions.
The permanent collection traces Van Gogh's entire artistic journey β from his early dark Dutch period through the brightness of his Paris years, to the vivid colour and emotional intensity of his Arles period, and finally to the haunting works of his final months at Auvers-sur-Oise.
Must-See Works
Sunflowers (1889)
One of Van Gogh's most beloved paintings β the Amsterdam version of his famous Sunflowers series, painted in Arles. The vivid yellows and the layered impasto technique are even more extraordinary in person.
The Bedroom in Arles (1888)
Van Gogh's idealised depiction of his bedroom at the Yellow House in Arles β thick brushstrokes, clashing colours and a bold simplicity that feels remarkably modern.
Wheatfield with Crows (1890)
One of the last paintings Van Gogh completed before his death β a turbulent sky over a golden wheatfield, with black crows flying in all directions. The emotional intensity is overwhelming.
