What is Zaanse Schans?

Zaanse Schans is a unique open-air museum on the banks of the Zaan river, just north of Amsterdam in the municipality of Zaandam. It's a living museum β€” real people live and work here, and the craftsmen practise traditional Dutch trades that have been carried out in this area since the 17th century.

The collection of historic green wooden houses, working windmills, and traditional workshops was assembled here from across the Zaan region in the 1960s and 1970s to preserve this heritage. The result is a remarkably atmospheric and photogenic destination that is simultaneously authentic and accessible.

What to See at Zaanse Schans

The Windmills

The six working windmills are the heart of Zaanse Schans. Each one served a different industrial purpose: grinding mustard, sawing wood, pressing oil, and producing paint pigments. Several windmills can be visited inside (small entry fee per windmill) β€” climbing to the sails deck offers spectacular views over the Zaan river and surrounding countryside.

Clog-Making Workshop (Klompenmakerij)

Watch traditional Dutch clog makers carve wooden shoes from solid blocks of poplar wood using hand tools β€” a skill passed down through generations. The workshop is fascinating to watch and clogs can be purchased as souvenirs.

Cheese Farm (Catharina Hoeve)

The Catharina Hoeve is a traditional Dutch cheese farm where you can watch cheese being made and taste various Dutch cheeses β€” from mild young Gouda to sharp aged varieties. The tasting is free with no obligation to purchase.

De Zaanse Schans Museum

Housed in one of the historic green wooden houses, the museum traces the industrial history of the Zaan region from the 17th century to the early 20th century, when this area was one of the most industrialised regions in the world.
