Why Keukenhof is Worth the Visit
There is nowhere on earth quite like Keukenhof in full bloom. Seven million flowering bulbs โ tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, crocuses and more โ planted across 32 hectares of immaculately maintained gardens, pavilions and woodland. The colour, the scale and the fragrance are overwhelming in the best possible way.
Keukenhof has been cultivating flowers since 1949 and it remains one of the Netherlands' most extraordinary visitor experiences. Despite the large crowds, the gardens are big enough to always find quiet corners of astonishing beauty.
What to See at Keukenhof
- The outdoor gardens: 32 hectares of themed gardens with colour-coordinated planting schemes that change each year according to the annual theme.
- The flower pavilions: Three enormous indoor pavilions showcase spectacular flower arrangements and special exhibitions, including rare orchid varieties.
- The windmill: A restored working windmill on the eastern edge of the garden with views over the bulb fields.
- Keukenhof Lake: Beautiful reflections of the surrounding blooms in the central lake โ one of the most photographed spots in the Netherlands.
- The forest garden: A quieter wooded area with naturalised bulbs growing under the trees โ a welcome escape from the busiest paths.
The Tulip Fields Beyond Keukenhof
The bulb-growing fields surrounding Keukenhof (the Bollenstreek, or Bulb Region) are an attraction in their own right during April. Driving or cycling through these fields โ vast stretches of solid colour in stripes of red, yellow, orange and purple โ is an unforgettable experience that many visitors rate above Keukenhof itself.
A private tour with a local guide is the best way to combine Keukenhof with the surrounding fields, stopping at the most photogenic spots that independent visitors often miss.

Keukenhof Visitor Tips
- Book well in advance: Keukenhof sells out completely on popular April weekends. Tickets should be booked months before your visit, not days.
- Arrive at opening (8am): The first two hours are genuinely magical โ wide paths, light crowds and the freshest flowers. By 11am the park is extremely busy.
- Weekday vs weekend: Weekdays in April are significantly less crowded than weekends. If you can visit on a Tuesday or Wednesday, the experience is far more peaceful.
- Best week to visit: Generally the last week of April is peak bloom. However, conditions vary year to year โ Keukenhof's website publishes live bloom reports.
- Combine with the fields: Allow time to drive through the surrounding bulb fields โ the open field tulips are spectacular and often overlooked by visitors who stay within the garden walls.
