About the Anne Frank House

The Anne Frank House at 263 Prinsengracht is one of the most visited and most important historical sites in the world. It is the house where Anne Frank, her family, and four other Jewish people hid in a concealed apartment โ€” known as the Secret Annex โ€” for over two years during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands in World War II.

Anne Frank was 13 when she and her family went into hiding in July 1942. She was 15 when they were discovered in August 1944. She died in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in February 1945, just a few weeks before the camp was liberated. Her diary, found by her father Otto Frank after the war, has been translated into 70 languages and has become one of the most widely read books in history.

The Secret Annex

The house is preserved largely as it was when the eight people were in hiding. The bookcase that concealed the entrance to the annex has been reconstructed, and visitors can walk through the actual rooms where Anne and the others lived in silence and fear for 761 days.

Anne's original diary โ€” the actual notebooks she wrote in โ€” are on display. Seeing the real, handwritten pages is profoundly moving in a way that no reproduction or film adaptation can match.

Visitor Tips

  • Book immediately: As soon as you know your Amsterdam dates, book Anne Frank House tickets. Don't wait until arrival.
  • Evening visits are quieter: If your schedule allows, an evening visit (after 7pm) tends to be calmer and more reflective.
  • Respect the space: This is not just a tourist attraction โ€” it is a memorial. The atmosphere inside is one of quiet reflection. No loud conversation or flash photography.
  • The audio guide is excellent: The house provides audio guides and there is also an excellent app. The commentary adds important context to every room.
  • Location: The house is on the Prinsengracht canal in the Jordaan district โ€” an ideal area to explore before or after your visit.
