About NEMO
NEMO is Amsterdam's science and technology museum, housed in a dramatic ship-shaped building designed by architect Renzo Piano, rising from the water beside the Central Station tunnel. The building itself is a landmark.
Inside, five floors of hands-on exhibitions invite visitors to experiment with energy, light, DNA, technology and the human body. Everything is interactive — NEMO is particularly brilliant for children aged 6–16, but genuinely engaging for adults too.
Highlights
- The rooftop terrace: Free to access in summer, offering one of the best panoramic views of Amsterdam over the old city, the IJ waterfront and the harbour.
- Energy & Matter exhibition: Interactive demonstrations of fundamental physics.
- Human Body exhibition: Fascinating exhibits on genetics, the brain and human development.
- Technology exhibitions: From robotics to digital technology.
Tips
- The rooftop terrace is free even without museum entry in summer.
- Book in advance on busy school holidays.
- Allow a full 3–4 hours for a comprehensive visit with children.
