Amsterdam Cruise Passenger Guide
Making the most of your time in Amsterdam β whether you have six hours or a full day ashore.
Amsterdam is one of Europe's most exciting cruise ports β and with the right planning, even a single day ashore can be extraordinary. The city's compact layout means the main attractions are within 30 minutes of the terminal, and a well-chosen shore excursion can take you to iconic Dutch countryside destinations that most independent travellers never reach.
This guide covers everything cruise passengers need to know: getting from the terminal to the city, what to see in different time windows, the best shore excursions, and tips for making the most of your Amsterdam day.

Cruise Passenger Tips for Amsterdam
Pre-book everything: Amsterdam's top museums (Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum) frequently sell out weeks in advance. With limited time ashore, you cannot afford to queue or find the museum fully booked on the day. Book online before your cruise departs.
Private tour vs ship excursion: Ship-organised excursions are convenient but often overpriced and conducted in large groups. An independent private tour gives you far more flexibility, personalisation and value β especially for small families or couples.
Allow time to return: Factor in travel time from your final destination back to the ship. A buffer of at least 1.5 hours before departure time is wise β Amsterdam city traffic can be unpredictable.
Currency: The Netherlands uses the Euro (β¬). Card payments are widely accepted, but carry some cash for small purchases and street food.
Weather: Amsterdam weather can be unpredictable. Pack a light, waterproof jacket regardless of the forecast β a brief shower is rarely enough to spoil the day.
