What Makes Giethoorn Special

Giethoorn is unlike anywhere else in the Netherlands — a village that developed without any roads, connected entirely by canals and narrow wooden footbridges. The only way to travel through the village is by electric boat, bicycle or on foot. The result is a place of extraordinary tranquillity — no cars, no traffic noise, just the sound of water and birds.

The village sits in the Wieden-Weerribben National Park, a vast area of Dutch peat wetlands. The thatched farmhouses, flower gardens and willow-lined canals create a scene that seems to belong to another century.

What to Do in Giethoorn

  • Hire an electric boat: This is the defining Giethoorn experience. Small electric 'whisper boats' can be hired without a licence (€15–30/hour) and navigated through the village canals independently.
  • Walk the footpaths: 7 km of walking paths follow the canals through the village and into the surrounding wetlands.
  • Het Olde Maat Uus Museum: A beautifully preserved farmhouse museum giving a vivid insight into traditional Giethoorn life.
  • Cycling: Bikes can be hired in the village for exploring the wider wetlands area.

Getting to Giethoorn

Giethoorn is approximately 90 minutes from Amsterdam by car. By public transport, take the train to Steenwijk then bus 70 to Giethoorn (journey approximately 2.5 hours total). A car or private transfer is strongly recommended for the most comfortable experience.

Visitor Tips

  • Arrive early or late: Giethoorn is one of the most popular day trip destinations in the Netherlands. Arriving before 10am or after 3pm makes an enormous difference to the atmosphere.
  • Avoid peak summer weekends: The village can be overwhelmingly busy on sunny summer weekends. Weekdays are significantly more peaceful.
  • Book boat hire in advance: On busy days, boat hire companies sell out. Book your boat online before visiting.
