About the Stedelijk Museum
The Stedelijk is Amsterdam's premier museum of modern and contemporary art and design, with a collection spanning from 1870 to the present day. Its holdings include some of the most significant works of 20th-century European and American art.
The museum occupies a stunning building on Museumplein — a 19th-century neo-Renaissance main building dramatically extended with the controversial "bathtub" modern wing. The combination is bold and successful.
What to See
- Piet Mondrian collection: The largest Mondrian collection in the world — tracing his development from naturalistic landscapes through to the pure geometric abstraction he is famous for.
- Kazimir Malevich: Major works by the Russian Suprematist, including some of his most important abstract canvases.
- Post-war Dutch art: An outstanding collection of CoBrA and other post-war movements.
- Design collection: Furniture, industrial design and applied arts from the 20th and 21st centuries.
- Temporary exhibitions: The Stedelijk runs some of Europe's most ambitious temporary contemporary art exhibitions.
Tips
- Thursday evenings (open until 10pm) offer a calmer, more adult atmosphere.
- Combine with the Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum in a single Museumplein day.
- The museum café is excellent for lunch.
